Souda Bay War Cemetery

A place of remembrance and honor by the sea

Located near the port of Souda, just a 10-minute drive from Althea Maisonettes, the Souda Bay War Cemetery is a serene and moving place of remembrance. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, it is the final resting place for more than 1,500 soldiers, mainly from the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, who lost their lives during World War II—particularly during the Battle of Crete in 1941.

Surrounded by olive trees and overlooking the bay, the cemetery is beautifully kept and invites quiet reflection. Rows of white headstones, manicured lawns, and views of the sea create an atmosphere of dignity and peace. Visitors are welcome to pay their respects, walk the grounds, and learn more about the historical events that shaped modern Crete.
