Our Location

Just a 10-minute walk from Althea Maisonettes takes you to one of Crete’s most significant ancient city-states: Ancient Aptera. Many stories surround the origin of the city’s name, with the most charming being the myth of a musical contest held on the hill between the Muses and the Sirens. The Sirens lost, shed their wings, became "apteres" (wingless), turned white, and fell into the sea. Their white feathers are said to have formed the small islets in Souda Bay, called the Lefkes.

Archaeological excavations have revealed the city’s impressive fortifications stretching 4 km, Roman vaulted cisterns, parts of a private villa with a columned courtyard, and a two-part sanctuary from the 4th century BC. A highlight is the ancient theater, which holds 350 spectators and is the only fully restored ancient theater in Crete. It "came alive" again after 17 centuries of silence through a unique performance of a rhapsody from the Odyssey. Findings from the site—including pottery, coins, figurines, inscriptions, sculptures, and small artifacts—are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Chania. In the surrounding area, two fortresses of great historical interest from the Ottoman period still stand: the Palaikastro Fortress (Koules) and Izzedin Fortress in nearby Kalami.

Often referred to as the "Little Pompeii of Crete" due to the exceptional preservation of its monuments, Ancient Aptera is a unique place that awakens powerful emotions in visitors. Exploring it is a journey through time—an experience you’ll carry in your heart forever.

The archaeological site is open daily from 08:30 to 15:00, except Mondays. In the summer, musical and theatrical performances, as well as full-moon celebrations, are occasionally held there.
