An exotic paradise of turquoise waters and pink sand
Balos Lagoon is one of the most stunning and photographed landscapes in Crete—and with good reason. Located at the northwestern tip of the island, near Cape Gramvousa, it is famous for its shallow, warm turquoise waters, white sand with pink hues, and its exotic natural beauty.
Protected under the Natura 2000 network, the area is home to rare species of flora and fauna. The scenery is reminiscent of the Caribbean, with calm waters and radiant light making Balos a perfect spot for swimming, photography, and quiet exploration.
You can reach Balos either by boat from Kissamos port (Kavonisi) or by car to a certain point followed by a 20–30 minute hike. The trail offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the lagoon from above—one of the most iconic views in Crete.
The best time to visit is early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and enjoy the serene atmosphere of this magical place.
